Functional Medicine

Traditionally, a medical doctor uses drugs as means to treat any dysfunction or disease. The doctor may refer you to a specialist, but the specialist will likely still advise you to take medication. However, you will only find yourself frustrated because this approach does not eliminate the disease at all.  Introducing, Functional Medicine.

Medications can only help manage – really just mask – the symptoms, and often create other issues from the side effects.

Since chronic disease is influenced by food, lifestyle, environment and genetics, it cannot be easily solved by drugs and surgery.

Fortunately, we now have Functional Medicine, which is a new and better way to address to healthcare needs!

It’s a natural way to treat and prevent chronic diseases, and to become truly healthy again.

Functional Medicine addresses the underlying causes of disease, using a systems-oriented approach and engaging both patient and doctor in a therapeutic partnership. It is a patient-centered approach wherein the practitioners spend time with their patients, listening to their histories and looking at the interactions among genetic, environmental, and lifestyle factors that can influence chronic diseases.

It seeks to identify and address the root causes of disease, and views the body as one integrated system, and not a collection of independent organs divided up by medical specialties. It treats the whole system, not just the symptoms.

Conventional medicine asks the question: “What drug matches up with this disease?” Functional medicine asks the questions: “Why do you have this problem in the first place?” and “Why has function been lost?” and “What can we do to restore function?”

A Functional Medicine treatment plan may involve one or more of a wide range of therapies, including nutritional coaching, and lifestyle changes such as improving sleep quality or quantity, increasing physical activity, decreasing stress and learning stress management techniques.

At Advanced Health and Wellness Center our new Functional Medicine Program helps us find out what processes and body systems may not be working to their full potential in our patients. We address medical conditions such as the following:

  • Thyroid disorders
  • Autoimmune diseases
  • Numbness/Tingling
  • Peripheral Neuropathy
  • Carpal Tunnel
  • Restless Leg Syndrome
  • Fatigue
  • Fibromyalgia
  • Osteoporosis
  • Allergies/Sinusitis
  • Digestive disorders
  • Hormonal imbalances

Here are our services:

Nutritional coaching may involve dietary interventions (e.g., elimination diet, high phytonutrient diversity diet, low glycemic-load diet), and nutraceuticals (e.g., vitamins, minerals, essential fatty acids, botanicals).

Food sensitivities result in stress. Stress slows the metabolic rate, interferes with digestion and leads to a range of health issues. There are numerous approaches to determining if an individual is sensitive or allergic to a certain food or substance. Common techniques include muscle testing and electrodermal biofeedback.

Exercise with oxygen therapy can provide your body with more energy during workouts, which can help you to push yourself and burn more calories than ever before. The air you breathe in during exercise with oxygen therapy can also help you rebuild and restore your muscles later on.

Chiropractic is a natural form of health care that uses spinal adjustments to correct these misalignments and restore proper function to the nervous system, helping the body to heal without surgery or medication.

Therapeutic exercises involve physical activities that focus on restoring and maintaining strength, endurance, flexibility, stability, and balance. The goal of therapeutic exercises is to return an injured patient to a fully functional and pain-free state.

Whole Body Vibration Therapy (WBVT) is a passive exercise, in which the person lays, sits, or stands on a platform that vibrates rapidly in one or more directions. Research shows that WBVT can reduce back pain, improve balance in older adults, and reduce bone loss.

Massage therapy is a manual manipulation of soft body tissues, specifically muscles, tendons, connective tissues, ligaments and joints for the purpose of optimizing health. With massage therapy, physical function can be developed, maintained and improved. Physical dysfunction, pain, and the effects of stress can also be relieved or prevented through massage therapy.

Microcurrent therapy simply restores normal frequencies within the cells, resulting in significant improvements in pain, inflammation, and function. The enhancement in blood flow and the decrease in inflammation reduce pain and muscle spasms.

Laser therapy helps reduce pain and inflammation related to many conditions. It has no side effects and is often used to treat acute and chronic diseases.

Spinal decompression therapy is a modern, non-surgical traction procedure that effectively treats low back, neck, and radiating leg and arm pain. This type of traction is very effective in relieving pain associated with spinal disc herniation, degenerative spinal discs, and facet joint syndromes. It is safe, comfortable and painless.
